Potomac County, Maryland

A recommended solution to Constitutional representation for the citizens of Washington D.C. as well as other considerations.

Alan’s TTIM Stories #57

Here’s an idea.

You haven’t heard of Potomac County, Maryland, because it has yet to exist. Ever since the establishment of Washington District of Columbia in 1790, questions have haunted the country about Constitutional realities, specifically considering the voting rights and representation of United States citizens living within the District.

Let’s examine arguments:

  • DC residents pay Federal income tax yet have no voting representation in Congress which makes tax laws.
  • The DC budget is determined by Congress (not always known for efficiency and timeliness). Having no constituents to answer to, are the needs of District residents at the foremost thoughts of legislators?
  • No other democracy on earth denies representation of citizens living in its capital. It’s a worldwide embarrassment for the home of the free.
  • DC residents are part of the United States military, defending freedoms they do not enjoy.

The historic boundaries included an equal amount of territory on the other side of the Potomac in Virginia. It was determined in 1846 that this area was not necessary for the national capital. President Polk signed legislation returning the Virginia portion. In 1847, Virginia accepted the gesture.

This action could happen again. Land not necessary for the Federal Government can be returned to Maryland.

Benefits of a Maryland county:

  • Representatives to Congress (Senators and Representatives)
  • Less responsibility of the Federal Government
  • Sense of belonging to an existing state

There is a Liberal v. Conservative argument. Conservatives in Maryland will object to adding DC liberals to the Maryland voting ranks. A possible solution for all conservatives – change your message to be more inclusive and support government programs to improve the lives of Americans.

The Federal Government will maintain responsibility for sections of the old District. The National Mall, including adjacent government buildings, are responsibility of the National Park Service. Rock Creek National Park is a new designation along with Anacostia National Park. Military installations remain under the control of the Department of Defense.

For the transition:

  • Civilian population added to Maryland in the 2030 census and will be part of congressional redistricting, adding state delegates and senator(s) to Maryland.
  • All residents are citizens of Maryland unless given a temporary status (per national elected officials for example).
  • Federal government will provide financial aid to Maryland during the transition.

The change will affect the police force, school district, etc.

Why Potomac County? The names Washington and Columbia represent a slave owner and abuser of indigenous peoples. It’s a good opportunity to embrace fresh, non-controversial ideas.

Can this happen? Yes! Will it happen? Doubtful. It’s a good idea – right?
