Politics of the Individual

Alan’s TTIM Stories #61

“All generations are dangerous, even this one.”
Alexandre Dumas

“I am fearful, or suspicious, of generalizations… They cannot guide me reliably in making decisions about particular individuals.”
Ruth Bader Ginsburg

“There are no generalizations in American politics that vested selfishness cannot cut through.”
John Gunther

“I have warned about the storm and the danger that new leadership in Washington might pose to our economy…..And while there are many opinions about how we ended up in this crisis, let’s work together to make sure there is NEVER a question of who solved it….Let’s leave no one behind.”
Maryland Governor Les Moore

Nothing in the past few decades have successfully solved all the problems facing our nation. Instead we have voted to abandon people in favor of self-interest and uncontrolled power of a few for the expectations of a few more dollars in our pockets. Policies are based on misinformed generalizations. Basing policy on generalizations is wasteful and dangerous.

Let’s review:

Not every immigrant is a criminal.
Instead of looking for solutions on an individual basis, the government herds people like cattle, separates families, and dumps humans in unwelcoming countries. For every person crossing the border there is a unique story. Solutions include everything from intensive therapy to simply connecting a person with employment. Vilification leads to misunderstanding and chaos – but no solutions.

Not every homeless person is mentally ill.
We can no longer act on non-solutions: ignoring those in need, leveling homeless camps, and incarceration. What is their story? By accepting unique situations, we begin to offer services to meet individual needs.

Not everyone benefitting from government assistance is lazy.
The nation cannot rely on elimination of benefits as motivation for self-reliance. Again, one person may need serious therapy, another might need an employment opportunity.

Not every politician is corrupt.
Sadly, I can’t prove the above hypothesis without an in depth investigation. The news is full of cowards of self-interest preaching fear, assuming the worst and determined to make those assumptions a reality to place blame and win elections. It becomes the duty of voters to vet all candidates.

To solve problems we must exchange vilification with opportunity. Who is responsible for these solutions?  In the current atmosphere of a callous, insensitive, pitiless federal government, it is the responsibility of state and local governments with the assistance of non-profit organizations to fill the void of social service. The greatness of the nation depends on the strength of the individual American and potential American.

We can all contribute. Support a nonprofit in your community in the business of providing necessary services. And VOTE!
